Antique French Country House Oil Painting on Board
Antique French Country House Oil Painting on Board

A stone house with three dormers, a capped chimney and a teal iron gate, painted in quick, thick strokes on a small board. It reads as a study more than a finished picture, with the grass slope in the foreground handled in a few broad passes. The gate and the outbuilding door share the same blue green, which holds the whole composition together. Unsigned in any readable way, and nothing on the front names the place.
Antique condition consistent with age. The paint surface shows several fine vertical hairline cracks, most visible in the sky and along the right side, running with the grain of the board. One hairline crack reaches the right edge. There are small scuffs in the sky area and scattered tiny orange flecks across the grass, which may be spotting or very small paint loss. I have not examined the surface under magnification or UV, so the varnish state and any previous retouching are unknown and I am not claiming the surface is untouched.
The reverse is covered with backing tape that has not been lifted, so the condition of the back of the board and any markings on it are undetermined.
The frame has surface wear to the gilding, with rubbing along the edges and corners. A few small holes are visible in the bottom edge of the frame. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
