Frailero leather side chair, hand pegged walnut frame, thick leather back and seat over four studded rows of fluted brass nailheads. Plain and linear the way this friar's chair form was built, with a scalloped carved apron and a box stretcher. The leather has gone deep and crazed with age, and the whole chair has the dry, worked surface a piece earns over a couple of centuries of use.
Sold as-is; photos govern. The leather on both the back and seat is old and heavily crazed, with deep cracking, darkening, surface loss, and a few small holes and punctures in the seat. The dryness and crackle are consistent with long age and are original to the chair, not restored. The walnut frame carries old, inactive worm channeling throughout the rails, apron, and legs; it has been checked and is not active. Expect splits and checking in the rails and legs, general edge abrasion, and losses along the moldings of the carved apron. The fluted brass nailheads appear largely complete, with irregular spacing in places and a few likely later replacements. All four feet carry old red inventory paint at the tips. The underside seat board bears faint traces of old inventory marks, none legible as a maker or date. Primary wood is assessed as walnut based on color, grain, and the base rate for the form; it has not been confirmed by end grain, so it is stated as an assessment. Origin is given as Spanish or Italian: the frailero form is most associated with Spain but is Italian in origin and was made across both, and no sourcing evidence establishes the country of manufacture. Frame reads solid and seats squarely.
