An oval oil on canvas, unsigned, painted around 1910 in the Continental European tradition of the field-flower bouquet. Marguerite daisies, blue cornflowers, yellow buttercups and coral poppies gathered into a small yellow glazed jug, with cut blooms scattered at its foot. The oval format is the reason I bought it. Purpose-made oval stretchers were never produced in the numbers rectangles were, and this one is original to the canvas.

Condition

The painting is in good condition for its age with honest wear. There is restoration to the lower right corner. On the reverse, an old canvas patch has been adhered toward the upper right of the back, which corresponds to the upper left of the painted surface, where there is a small paint and ground loss roughly a quarter inch across. A short light horizontal mark sits at the base of the jug, and there are a few dark surface marks in the background to the right of the bouquet. The canvas is slightly slack along the upper left of the oval. The tacking edges are frayed and rubbed all the way around with the raw canvas edge exposed, which is usual for a canvas that has never been framed. The tacks are original, hand driven, and oxidized. The oval stretcher is sound, assembled from curved segments with corner blocks and a single horizontal cross bar. A brass ring hanger sits at the top of the stretcher, and modern D rings and wire have been added for hanging.
