A steep-roofed farmhouse of brick and close-set timber rises half in shadow under a single lit sky, the pale infill between its studs catching what light there is. This is Norman colombage, the vernacular of the Pays d'Auge countryside, and it belongs to the current of later 19th-century painting that turned the plain rural farmhouse into a subject worth painting. A working cottage, not a grand house, the kind a French painter of the period would carry home from the country. Tonal and unhurried, built in muted greens and browns with the sky doing the lifting. Oil on board, in its original giltwood frame. Unsigned, as domestic-trade landscape work of this period usually is.
The painting surface is stable on its board. Craquelure runs through the sky, consistent with age. There are two areas of paint disturbance in the sky at upper right that read as loss or abrasion in the photographs. Scattered surface grime overall, and some darkening in the lower foreground shadows, which are painted very dark to begin with.
The frame is in poor condition and should be understood as decorative rather than intact. There is heavy gesso and plaster loss along the top rail and at both lower corners, open splits at the corners, and exposed red bole and bare wood in multiple places along all four sides. The beaded inner edge survives largely complete. The frame is original to the work and holds together, but it carries its damage openly.

All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.
Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
Furniture is the exception. Because of size and weight, furniture shipping is quoted separately rather than calculated at checkout. Send a DM on Instagram or email austynmariedesign@gmail.com for a quote, or arrange your own shipping from the warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
If your piece arrives damaged, please photograph the damage immediately (including packaging), contact us within 48 hours at austynmariedesign@gmail.com, and do not discard any packaging.
