An English cast brass chimney ornament in the form of a Setter, modeled in the breed's classic pointing stance with one foreleg raised and tail held horizontal. These flat-backed figural brasses sat on the mantelpiece as purely decorative pieces, the working English household's answer to the porcelain figure. Sporting subjects dominated the category from about 1850 onward, and the Setter, with its dramatic pointing pose and long-feathered coat, was one of the most often reproduced. The brass carries a warm golden tone across the front with darker patina settling into the recesses of the long fur. No maker's mark.
The piece is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear. The casting is sound throughout with no cracks, breaks, or losses to the form.
