Antique English Silver Open Salt Dish, Ca. 1880

Open salt dishes like this one were a standard fixture on English tables from the Georgian period through the Edwardian era, placed at individual settings so diners could help themselves with a small spoon. This example is the classic English form: a round bowl on three cast hoof feet with a reeded decorative border at the rim. The piece carries hallmarks on the base consistent with British sterling silver. It came out of England and reads as Victorian in date, most likely 1870s to 1890s based on the proportions and foot style.
Good antique condition overall. The exterior silver is bright with no dents, splits, or repairs to the body or feet. The reeded border at the rim is crisp. The interior shows salt staining and light corrosion from use, which is normal and expected for an open salt that was used at table. No liner is present and no spoon is included.
