A plain turned horn tumbler, English, with the mottled amber-to-dark coloration that marks natural bovine horn at its most striking. These cups were made throughout Britain from the medieval period well into the late Victorian era, heated and formed from a single section of horn, polished smooth, and pressed flat at the base to stand upright. This example has the satisfying heft and warmth of genuine horn in hand, with organic color variation running from near-black at the rim through rich amber at the waist.

Natural bovine horn

England
Age
Circa late 19th century, ca. 1880 to 1900

Condition

The cup is in honest antique condition appropriate to its age. The horn is intact with no cracks or splits. The exterior surface shows mineral deposits and light surface debris consistent with long storage, which will clean. The base has warped slightly out of round over time, a natural consequence of unlined horn responding to humidity and temperature across many decades. The cup stands on its own but does not sit perfectly flat. The interior is sound with the same characteristic mottled coloration as the exterior. Overall a solid, characterful example.
