Antique English Horn Snuff Box with Bone Inlay
Antique English Horn Snuff Box with Bone Inlay
Couldn't load pickup availability
A small English horn snuff box with a bold geometric lid inlay of bone and pressed horn panels arranged in a diamond pattern. The body is worked horn throughout, deep blue-black with the characteristic grain and translucency of the material. The lid inlay alternates cream bone triangles with amber-clouded horn panels, flush-set and well fitted, giving the piece a graphic quality that reads as confident and deliberate rather than decorative in the conventional sense. The hinge runs the full length of the back edge and functions well. Interior is unlined horn showing the natural golden-brown striations of the material.
The box is in good antique condition consistent with age and use. The horn body is intact with honest surface wear, light scratching across the sides and base, and some minor chipping to the horn at the corners and along the base edges, visible in the photos. The blue-black patination is deep and stable. The lid inlay is in good condition with no missing panels and no lifting at the edges. The bone elements retain their cream tone with expected age-related yellowing. The pressed horn panels are intact and show no cracking. The hinge is sound and the lid opens and closes cleanly. The interior shows natural horn with staining consistent with long use as a snuff box. No repairs observed.
