A dark bay thoroughbred stands in profile against a minimal stable interior, coat rendered with the close academic attention that characterised the best Victorian equestrian portraiture. To the right, a grey saddlecloth trimmed in red hangs from a chain rack over a hay bale, its monogrammed initials "J.F." picked out in red on the face of the cloth. That detail is what makes this painting something more than a generic stable study: someone commissioned this to document a specific horse, and a specific owner's colours.
Antique condition consistent with approximately 125 years of age. Surface grime present across the canvas. Minor paint loss at corners. A horizontal canvas crease visible in the upper third, consistent with period storage or transport. No tears or active flaking observed. Professional cleaning and lining recommended prior to framing. Sold unframed.
