A small coopered treen jar built in the late 19th century from alternating staves of light and dark hardwood. The form copies a wine cask in miniature, with turned reeded bands at the top and bottom imitating the iron hoops on a real barrel. Coopering at this scale is a workshop flex, twelve separate staves cut and fitted by hand, alternating wood tones so the contrast reads from across a room. The piece is sold as a decorative vessel without its original lid. At five inches across, it sits well on a desk, a bar cart, an entry console, or a bookshelf, and it holds keys, pens, cocktail picks, or whatever you'd like to drop into it.

Condition

Honest antique condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with a piece roughly 140 years old. The body is solid and stands cleanly on its own. The original lid is not present, and the interior shows a regular pattern of small tack marks across the base where a fabric or sheet-metal liner was once fitted. The interior staves have a darker tone, likely from age and original finish. There is one vertical stave split on the body that runs through the lower turned ring band, where a dark stave has separated slightly from the adjacent light stave. The split is stable and not progressing. The base disc is sound. The exterior has a warm patina with good color contrast across the alternating staves. Surface wear, light scuffs, and minor rim wear are present throughout. Sold as a decorative vessel for everyday objects, not as a working sealed container.
