English or Possibly Continental Slatted Mahogany Jardinière with Brass Liner, Circa 1900
An English or possibly Continental jardinière in the Sheraton Revival manner, with a slatted mahogany urn-form body raised on a turned plinth and three brass ball feet. The brass liner sits inside and shows through the slats, which is the whole point of the form. Boxwood and satinwood line inlay runs around the rim and in three bands across the turned plinth, the kind of restrained detailing that defined late Victorian and Edwardian drawing-room cabinetwork. Two applied brass handle plates are mounted on opposing sides of the rim, and the original hand-formed brass liner is present with its punched drainage hole intact.
The piece is in honest antique condition with several condition issues a buyer should understand before purchase. One of the mahogany slats has a full through-crack that has been glued and remains fragile. The repair holds the slat in place but the slat is not structurally sound and the piece must be handled with care. The turned plinth base has a shrinkage crack running through it. The boxwood and satinwood line inlay is intact and complete around the rim and on the plinth. The finish shows surface wear and minor scratches consistent with age. There is no evidence of woodworm, current or historic. The three brass ball feet are present and intact. Both brass handle plates are secure.
The brass liner has been repaired multiple times over its life. There is a soldered rectangular patch on the upper rim, a long vertical re-soldered seam running from the rim down toward the base, and a circular brass disc soldered into the interior bottom that appears to be either a reinforcement or a replacement bottom. The liner sits noticeably crooked inside the wooden body rather than flush. The original punched drainage hole is present on the side wall. The interior shows heavy oxidation, water staining, and verdigris spotting from long use holding wet soil. The liner is sound for decorative use and light planting with a saucer or inner pot, but it would not be appropriate as a wine cooler or for holding ice or water directly.
The construction is unmarked, which is normal for this category of Edwardian cabinetwork.
