A small turned wood riser, ebonized long ago and worn down over the years so the warm red ground shows through at the rim. It stands on three little bun feet and has a shallow recessed top, made to lift and hold something you want to show off, a vase, a small sculpture, a bell jar. I like it best on its own as a low pedestal for a favorite object. The kind of quiet, useful thing that makes a shelf look considered.

Condition

This has honest age and I want to be clear about all of it. The ebonized surface is worn throughout, most at the top rim, where the red-brown ground underneath shows through. To my eye that wear reads as character rather than damage, and it is what makes the piece look genuinely old rather than new. There is a short, stable check, meaning a shallow split, in the top board near the rim. It does not move and does not affect how the piece sits. The underside shows old flight holes from historic wood worm. These look long inactive, with no fresh powder. There is a small hole through the center of the top, original to how these were made to seat a dome or a fitting. The piece sits flat and stable on its three feet, with no wobble. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
