A Dutch slatted mahogany jardinière in the urn form, with the original hand-formed brass liner and brass swing handle. The form belongs to a family of 19th century Dutch and Continental vessels built around a brass liner inside a slatted wood cage, a tradition that included tea stoves, foot warmers, and braziers, all designed to protect the wood while letting air circulate around the heated brass. Most pieces in this tradition were later repurposed as jardinières and planters, which is how they are bought and sold today. I sourced this one from a dealer in England, where it had lived for the past century.

Condition

The piece is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear consistent with around a century of use. The slatted mahogany body is structurally sound, with all slats intact and securely seated between the top and bottom brass bands. The mahogany retains good color and depth of patina across the body slats, pedestal column, and triform base.

There are old shrinkage splits running through one section of the curved mahogany top rim, visible under the brass band. These are cosmetic only. The rim holds its shape and the brass band seats properly. One of the shaped feet at the base shows a similar cosmetic split along the top of the foot. Both are structurally sound with no movement or wobble. No evidence of woodworm.

The original brass top and bottom bands are in place, and the original brass swing handle and side brackets are present and functional. The hand-formed brass liner is the original and shows the marks of long use, with softened patina, surface scratches, light dings, and a rolled rim. There are a few small pinprick marks through the upper side wall of the liner, which are either original vent holes from the piece's working life or drainage holes added when the piece was used as a planter. The liner lifts cleanly in and out of the body.
