Antique Continental Still Life Classical Bust with Chrysanthemums Oil Painting
Antique Continental Still Life Classical Bust with Chrysanthemums Oil Painting
Couldn't load pickup availability
A French or Belgian academic still life, oil on canvas laid to board, depicting a terracotta classical female bust surrounded by white chrysanthemums against a deep teal and near-black ground. The composition is confident and practiced, the flower handling done with short staccato brushstrokes characteristic of a trained Continental painter working in the 1880 to 1910 period. Unsigned.
The canvas has been laid to board, a period conservation treatment that has stabilized the surface. Craquelure is present throughout the painted surface and is most pronounced in the dark upper left quadrant, consistent with age. Minor paint loss and abrasion are present at the edges and corners of the board. White speckling is visible in the lower portion of the surface and should be examined in person to determine whether it is minor paint chip loss, gesso showing through thin paint, or surface debris. The reverse is painted green-grey. Offered as found, unframed.
