c. 1880–1930

This antique heraldic artwork depicts a richly detailed continental coat of arms, rendered on an orange-toned paper ground and accented with metallic highlights. The composition features a traditional shield bearing a silver column and a red lion on a deep blue field, surmounted by a helmet with elaborate scrolling mantling and a decorative crest above. Beneath the shield, a hand-lettered scroll displays the family name as written.

The use of metallic pigment in the helmet and ornamental elements adds depth and visual presence, suggesting a hand-finished or finely produced decorative work rather than a standard flat print. Pieces like this were commonly created in continental Europe in the late 19th to early 20th century, often commissioned or collected as expressions of lineage, identity, or heraldic interest, and were frequently preserved in albums or framed for display.

Presented loose behind a cream-colored mat with a hand-cut window, this piece offers wonderful versatility for framing. Its scale and warm palette make it especially well suited for a study, library, office, or gallery wall, where it adds an immediate sense of history and collected character.

Condition:

The cream mat exhibits toning, scattered spotting, and light staining along the edges and corners. The paper shows overall even aging, with areas of discoloration visible on the reverse and evidence of prior mounting at the top edge. No major losses are observed to the central heraldic design, which remains visually strong with intact color and metallic detailing.
