Antique Brass Measuring Tool
Antique Brass Measuring Tool

A brass measure for dosing black powder into a gun, with a turned wood handle that kept fingers clear of the flask or tin. Black powder was measured by volume in drams, so a shooter carried something like this for every day in the field. Small, plain, and clearly made to be used, it has the worn warmth of a tool that was actually handled.
The pouring lip is slightly pinched and out of true. The brass is darkened and mottled, with spotting on the barrel and wear from handling, and the stamped numerals are softened with age. A few of the graduated numerals to the left of the slot are too worn to read. The turned wood handle has fine scratches along its length and a pale, powdery patch to one side, cause not established.
The cap does not unscrew, so the interior has not been inspected. The pin visible in the slot and the way the measure adjusts have not been tested, and I am not making any claim about how it functions. It has not been used or fired and is sold as a collectible tool, not for shooting. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
