A flock of six sheep settled on a hillside at the close of day, one ewe standing watch while the others rest in the long grass, a wooded bluff rising behind them and open sky opening out to the left. The painting sits in the Belgian tradition of sheep-in-landscape work that runs through the middle and later 19th century, the same tradition that produced Verboeckhoven and the de Beul family. This example is unsigned, which is usual for animal-and-landscape studies of this kind, many of which were painted for the trade rather than for exhibition. The fleece is the thing to look at closely: each animal is modeled with a different weight of wool, the standing ewe in a deep russet against the pale gold of the two at rest.
The painting presents well overall with a warm, unified surface. There is fine age craquelure across the sky, visible on close inspection and consistent with the age of the work. A few small surface accretions and pale specks are present in the sky passage. The paint film reads as stable in the areas visible to me, with no tears, punctures, or significant losses apparent. There is minor rubbing at the extreme edges where the board meets the frame rebate. I have not examined the work outside the frame and cannot speak to the reverse or to any earlier restoration, so I am describing only what is determinable in hand and from the photographs.
The frame is original to the work and carries scattered composition losses and rubbing to the high points of the ornament, most visible along the outer leaf edge and at the corners. This is normal for a giltwood frame of this age and does not detract from its presence.
