A. Barth captured his own town from its edge, the parish church of Puurs rising honey-gold above a tangle of late-summer garden and red-tiled rooftops. The signature reads "A. Barth" over "Puers," the older spelling of the Antwerp-province town, which places the painter squarely in Flanders. The sky is worked wet into wet in thick curls of cream and pale blue, and the whole panel carries the loose, confident touch of a trained hand painting out of doors. Oil on panel, in an ornate gilt frame with age.
The painted surface reads as stable, with the thick, textured impasto of the sky and foliage intact and age-appropriate. I see no tears or major paint loss in the image field from the photographs. Please review all photographs closely for surface texture and any minor wear, as they form part of this description and this is my in-hand read rather than a laboratory examination.
The frame carries the condition issues. There are composition-ornament losses at the upper left corner, where the gilded scrollwork has chipped away to expose white gesso and green bole, and there is scattered flaking and wear along the sight edge and outer molding, with the gilding rubbed to the red bole in places. The frame is ornamental and complete in its overall form but shows these honest losses. The verso is a solid wood panel set into the frame, with later hanging wire and mirror-plate hardware, a chalk "1/5" inscription, and a partial paper label. All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.
Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
If your piece arrives damaged, please photograph the damage immediately (including packaging), contact us within 48 hours at austynmariedesign@gmail.com, and do not discard any packaging.
