Antique Belgian grisaille panel, oil on canvas, painted as a trompe l'oeil relief of putti at their arts. On the left a putto tunes a lute while another works at a small easel, a dog curled at their feet. In the center they crowd a great reclining lion, one reaching for its muzzle, another astride its back with a brush held like a lance. The whole thing is worked in flat grey-green monochrome so the figures read as carved stone, the old painter's trick of making a canvas pretend to be sculpture. In the manner of Jacob de Wit, the Netherlandish master of this bas-relief style, by an unidentified Continental hand.

Condition

Painted in grisaille as an imitation of low relief and reading convincingly as carved stone. The surface carries craquelure throughout, consistent with age. There is paint loss and flaking along the top edge and at the corners, with a few scattered small losses and dark specks in the field. All four tacked edges show wear and abrasion, with some fraying at the upper corners. Scattered surface grime and minor accretions are present. The work is unframed and sold as is on its original strainer, which shows honest age and oxidation to the reverse. A modern wire hanger has been added. Condition notes are based on close inspection of the piece in hand and should be read as a working description of a decorative panel that shows its age, not a restored work. I have not had it professionally cleaned or restored.
