This is a small-scale three-drawer commode, circa 1900, in the neoclassical Louis XVI manner. The fruitwood front is worked with fine dark line inlay drawn into long lozenge reserves, and each side panel carries a large inlaid diamond. Above it all sits a black fossil-limestone top, the natural shell flecks scattered across the surface when the light catches it. Restrained rather than ornate.
The three graduated drawers are built the old way, in solid quarter-sawn oak with hand-cut dovetails. Brass swing-bail handles, diamond escutcheons, and tapered legs ending in brass sabots finish it.
Sold as-is; photos govern. This is a genuine antique carrying honest damage and old repairs, disclosed here in full. The two side panels each show splitting and cracking through the center of the veneered diamond reserve, prominent on these show surfaces, along with areas of veneer loss to the sides. The back left leg is damaged and carries an old repair; it is stable. The bottom drawer has a large crack that has been repaired. The case corners and top edges show veneer chips, lifting, and small losses. The planked back shows staining and later metal mending plates. Throughout, the fruitwood veneer and dark line inlay show minor lifting and small losses at edges consistent with age. The fossil-limestone top has surface scratching, light edge chips, and natural fossil inclusions inherent to the stone rather than damage. The three drawers are solid quarter-sawn oak with hand-cut dovetails and open and function. One key is provided; it locks and unlocks the top two drawers. The bottom drawer lock does not function. Wood species is stated as an assessment, cherry/fruitwood, from grain and color; the face is veneered and has been cleaned, so the pore cues that would separate cherry from pear are not readable, and pear is a genuine alternative. This piece stands and functions but should be understood as a decorative antique with visible flaws, not a restored example.
