Antique Ebonized Wall Shelf
Antique Ebonized Wall Shelf

An ebonized hanging wall shelf in the English Aesthetic Movement taste, made to hang and display small treasures against its own mirrored and velvet-lined back. Two bowed tiers are wrapped in pierced brass galleries, carried on ring-turned split-baluster supports with incised fan-carved brackets. The lower tier is set with a bevelled mirror, the upper with a deep red velvet panel, so whatever you place on it is framed and doubled.
Ebonized surface throughout, with wear consistent with age and use. The ebonizing shows scuffing and minor loss at the finials, edges, and high points, with reddish substrate visible where the surface has worn — most noticeably on the turned finials and shelf edges. The bevelled mirror on the lower tier is original to the piece in appearance and shows scattered silvering loss and light foxing at the edges. The red velvet panel in the upper niche is faded and crushed from light and age, with tonal variation across the surface. The pierced brass galleries are intact around both tiers; check the curved returns at the shelf ends, where fretwork of this kind commonly lifts slightly at the tips. Small nail and tack holes are present around the gallery mounts. The back is finished plain with an aged wire hanger and two brass hangers. Dating is a construction-based estimate on the Aesthetic Movement styling and joinery; no maker's mark, stamp, or label is present. Sold as-is; photographs form part of the description.
