A woman in a salmon-pink gown leans back on a low seat, one hand behind her head, eyes turned toward the ceiling, an open book lying beside her. This is a painted copy after Albert Joseph Moore's An Open Book of about 1884, the original being a watercolor now in the V&A. Moore built his pictures from pose, pattern, and color rather than story, and this small oil keeps that arrangement.

School or Movement
Aesthetic Movement. A British art movement of roughly the 1860s through the 1890s built on the idea that a picture should please the eye rather than tell a story or teach a lesson. Its painters arranged figures, drapery, and pattern with the care of a decorative scheme, favoring soft color harmonies and classical-looking costume. The original composition belongs to this tradition.
Notes
The composition follows Albert Joseph Moore’s An Open Book, a watercolor of about 1884 held by the V&A, whose record describes it as a watercolor version of a figure in Moore’s Reading Aloud. The image was reproduced in print and on postcards between 1894 and 1908. This version is an oil, offered as a copy after Moore with no claim to his hand, and nothing ties it to those reproductions.

The painting is oil on canvas laid to a wood panel. The paint film is thin throughout, and the canvas weave reads through in the pale background and across the flesh and drapery. Raised paint is limited to the highlights of the skirt and the white band along the carpet edge. Areas of overpainting to the figure and the background were revealed under UV inspection, so the surface should not be read as untouched. The surface is matte and slightly dry in appearance, most noticeably in the flesh tones and the pink gown.

The frame is gilded, with molded foliate scroll ornament and a beaded inner edge. The corners and upper edge show losses to the gilding and ornament, with red bole visible beneath, and there is a larger loss at one upper corner. The frame is offered as it is and is not described as original to the painting.

The reverse is a dark stained wood panel with fine grain visible, scattered scratches, and two long gouges. Modern brown paper tape covers the edges and holds the panel in the frame, and it has lifted and torn at one upper corner. There the canvas is laid flat on a thin wood panel and trimmed flush with the panel edge, with no turnover. The frame back carries modern D-ring hangers, a nylon cord, and felt bumpers. The remaining edges are covered by tape and could not be seen.
