Published in 1916 by Chapman & Hall in London, this ninth edition of The Surgeon’s Log: Impressions of the Far East by J. Johnston Abraham blends travel narrative with medical memoir at the height of the British imperial era. Abraham records his experiences as a surgeon abroad, combining personal observation with commentary on the places, people, and customs he encountered across the Far East.

Books like this appealed to early 20th-century readers interested in travel, medicine, and life beyond Europe. Abraham’s account offers a useful period view of cross-cultural encounter through the eyes of a British physician, and it remains an engaging piece for collectors of travel writing, medical history, and imperial-era nonfiction.

This copy is especially attractive in a half-leather binding with green leather spine and corners, matching green cloth boards, gilt spine lettering, marbled endpapers, and eight illustrations. A strong decorative and readable volume for collectors of Far East travel, Edwardian memoir, or antique medical books.

The leather spine and corners show minor rubbing at the edges, consistent with age and handling, and the hinges remain sturdy. The gilt spine lettering is still legible and bright. The marbled endpapers retain their color well, with some age-toning at the edges. Internally, the pages show moderate tanning typical of books from this period, with only occasional foxing. The eight illustrated plates are intact and clear. Minor tears or chips appear to be confined to the preliminary pages. A well-preserved and attractive copy overall.
