A handsome 1900 copy of The Ingoldsby Legends, or Mirth and Marvels, bound in half leather with marbled boards, marbled endpapers, and matching marbled page edges. This illustrated Macmillan edition brings together Richard Harris Barham’s well-known comic legends, supernatural tales, and folkloric stories first published under the pen name Thomas Ingoldsby. It is a book that works beautifully as both literature and object, with the kind of Victorian and Edwardian decorative appeal that draws in collectors of old bindings as quickly as readers of classic ghostly and humorous writing.
What gives Ingoldsby Legends its lasting appeal is its unusual mix of Gothic atmosphere, folklore, satire, and wit. These stories play with haunted settings, old legends, and medieval imagination, but they do so with humor and theatrical energy rather than pure darkness. The sixteen illustrations add even more character, and this copy still has strong shelf presence despite the binding issues noted below. The front board is detached along one side and loose at the top. The spine is detached on one side and still attached on the other. The back board remains sound. General rubbing, scuffing, and wear to the leather, particularly along the joints, spine edges, and corners, consistent with age and use. The interior text block is secure with no loose pages. Pages are generally clean with age toning, scattered foxing throughout, and ownership writing to the front endpapers. The binding damage to the front is significant and is clearly shown in the photos. The book is a good candidate for display as-is, use as a reading copy, or professional restoration, but should be purchased with the binding condition fully in mind.

All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
