This 1894 Macmillan edition of Tom Brown’s School Days is a classic Victorian school story in a striking full calf prize binding from the School of King Henry VIII in Coventry. The binding gives this copy real presence, with raised bands, gilt tooling, a black leather title label, and the school’s gilt armorial crest on the front board. Marbled endpapers and matching marbled edges add even more visual appeal, making it a strong choice for both collectors and decorators who want an authentic English leather bound book with character.
The calf leather is in very good condition for its age, remaining smooth overall with light rubbing to the spine and board edges. The gilt armorial crest and gilt tooling are bright and clear throughout. Marbled endpapers and marbled page edges are vibrant and appear fully original. The hinges are strong, the text block secure and square. There is a small ink mark on the front cover near the armorial crest, and scattered foxing affects the prize plate and a handful of the preliminary pages. The illustrated plates and text pages are clean and easy to read. A handsome and well-preserved copy overall.
