This 1893 John Wyclif by Lewis Sergeant is a compact and attractive Victorian theology and church history volume in a handsome full tree calf prize binding from Bedford Modern School. It tells the story of the Oxford scholar whose criticism of church authority and advocacy for an English Bible helped shape later reform movements. With its gilt school crest, raised bands, burgundy spine label, and marbled endpapers and edges, this copy offers strong appeal for collectors of leather bindings, religious history, and English prize books.
The binding is snug with the gilt tooling crisp and the flame-figured covers retaining their full character. There is gentle rubbing at the corners and small chips to the headcaps, consistent with age and handling. The marbled endpapers and edges show light foxing to the liners but remain vivid overall. Inside, the text leaves are clean and unmarked with only the faintest toning at the margins. A very good copy in a prize binding of real distinction.
