Thomas Babington Macaulay's History of England opens with the accession of James II and carries through the Glorious Revolution and the early formation of British constitutional government. What set Macaulay apart in his own century, and still does, was his refusal to write history as a catalogue. He wrote it as narrative, with momentum and argument and a Victorian confidence that made even complicated political history feel like something you wanted to follow. Generations of readers took their first real sense of the English seventeenth century from these pages.
What elevates this particular set is the binding and the provenance. The full polished calf is framed by ornate gilt borders, the boards carry the University of Aberdeen crest and motto in clean gilt, and the spines are finished with raised bands, black title labels, and gilt tooling between the bands. The page edges are marbled. Prize bindings were produced in small quantities for academic recognition, so you find them far less often than the standard trade editions, and when they turn up in sound condition like this they tend not to stay available long.
The set is in very good condition overall. Both full calf bindings remain tight and structurally sound, with no looseness or cracking at the joints. The boards show expected surface wear and light staining, with minor rubbing to edges and corners, all consistent with age and use. The gilt decoration, including the armorial crest, borders, and spine tooling, remains clear and well defined.
Internally, both volumes are complete with no missing leaves. There is scattered foxing throughout, typical for British books of this period, but it does not interfere with readability. The original Aberdeen prize inscription is present, and there is no other writing or marking in either volume. The books are free of odor and sit square on the shelf.
