Painting Popularly Explained by Thomas John Gullick and John Timbs, second edition revised and enlarged, published in London by Lockwood & Co. in 1864. A Victorian technical manual on painting methods covering fresco, oil, water-colour, tempera, encaustic, miniature, mosaic, enamel, and manuscript illumination, written for working artists, students, and serious amateurs. The full morocco prize binding bears a gilt VR crowned cipher to the front board, and a Kidderminster School of Art prize label dated 1868 records its award to William Woodhead, placing this copy directly within the Victorian government art education movement.
The morocco binding shows rubbing to corners, spine ends, board edges, and raised bands, with surface scuffing to the leather consistent with age and use. The gilt VR cipher and spine lettering remain bright and legible, and the gilt page edges are largely preserved. The marbled endpapers are attractive and intact. Foxing is present on the pages, most noticeably around the frontispiece and title page. The 1868 prize label is present and legible on the front pastedown
