Printed in Stuttgart in 1859 by J. G. Cotta’scher Verlag, this is Friedrich Schiller’s famous Romantic tragedy Die Jungfrau von Orleans (The Maid of Orleans), his dramatic reimagining of Joan of Arc. Schiller blends history with Romantic idealism, turning Joan into a larger-than-life symbol of conviction, fate, and national identity, while also giving her a deeply human inner conflict that history does not. He wrote the play at a moment when Europe was still vibrating from the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon, and audiences were hungry for stories about courage, destiny, and the power of belief. This 1859 Cotta printing also lands in a period when Schiller had become “canon,” widely read and collected in the German-speaking world. The book itself is especially display-worthy, bound in a classic half leather binding with raised bands, gilt detailing, and a red spine label, paired with textured green cloth boards and leather corners, the kind of old-world shelf presence that makes a library wall feel instantly intentional.
The text block shows heavy scattered foxing and toning throughout, present from the title page onward and consistent across the early and later pages. The endpapers display spotting and period handwriting or numerals, suggesting prior ownership. The binding remains structurally present and visually attractive, though it shows notable rubbing and edge wear to the leather at the joints and spine edges, with additional wear at the corners. A faint hinge stress is visible at the inner joint but the book holds together and opens without alarm. The gilt detailing and red spine label remain visually striking and the overall shelf presence of this copy is strong. Best understood as a display and collectible copy rather than a reading text.
