Sir Adolphe Thiers's monumental account of the French Revolution, here in the 1846 London edition published by C. Daly, translated from the French by G. T. Fisher and issued complete in two volumes. Thiers wrote as both historian and political actor, later serving as the first president of the French Third Republic, which gives this narrative an unusual proximity to power. The half calf bindings with marbled boards and gilt-tooled spines display beautifully as a matched set, and the engraved plates of Robespierre, Marie Antoinette, and the attack on the Bastille bring the period vividly onto the page.
