Robertson's History of Scotland in the 1840 Edinburgh edition published by William and Robert Chambers, the work that established him alongside Hume and Gibbon as one of the defining British historians of the eighteenth century. First published in 1759, the history covers Scotland from the period before Mary, Queen of Scots through the reign of James VI and his accession to the English throne, with particular focus on the political and religious conflicts of the sixteenth century. The half leather and marbled boards binding gives this copy real decorative presence on a shelf.
The binding shows heavy rubbing and surface loss to the marbled boards with edge and corner wear, and scuffing to the leather along the spine and corners. The gilt tooling and red morocco label remain legible. Internally there is foxing and toning throughout the text block consistent with a book of this age. The structure is sound and the marbled endpapers and edges retain their decorative character.
