Twin volumes from A. J. Valpy's 1835 edition of The Works of Alexander Pope, edited by Rev. G. Croly with critical commentary and a memoir of the poet. These are Volumes I and III from the original four-volume set, bound uniformly in polished brown calf with raised spine bands, gilt compartments, and decorative gilt borders across both boards. Marbled endpapers and edges throughout, with engraved frontispiece and vignette title plates present. An armorial bookplate carrying the motto "Duty and Ease" adds a layer of provenance. Not a complete set, but a strong decorative pair with real shelf presence.
Both volumes are structurally sound with secure bindings, no loose pages, and no odor. The leather shows rubbing and wear consistent with age, most noticeable at edges, corners, and along the spines. Volume I has surface wear to the boards and fading to the spine. Volume III shows slight cracking to the leather along the spine but remains fully intact and stable. Interiors are toned with scattered foxing and age-related spotting throughout. Marbled endpapers are intact and engraved plates are present. Honest wear with strong shelf presence.
