This 1834 edition of Scripture Biography brings together reflective portraits of major biblical figures by Rev. Robert Wilson Evans, a noted Anglican clergyman and scholar. Published in London by J.G. & F. Rivington, the book was written to make the people of the Bible feel vivid and human to 19th-century readers, pairing spiritual instruction with biographical storytelling.
This copy stands out for its handsome full red morocco binding, raised spine bands, bright gilt decoration, and richly gilt page edges. A detailed frontispiece of St. Peter adds further visual appeal. It is a strong choice for collectors of antique devotional books, fine leather bindings, and 19th-century religious works.
The binding is sturdy and the red morocco retains good depth of color, with expected rubbing to the joints, spine bands, and corners. The gilt on the spine and board borders remains bright and well preserved. The text block is solid, with gilt edges showing mild age toning and some light dust soiling to the top edge. Internally, pages are clean overall with gentle age toning and foxing in places, most notably around the frontispiece and title page. A very good copy for its age.
