This 1807 editionof "The Minstrel" by James Beattie is a finely crafted book bound in full brown calf leather with gilt floral designs on the spine. The poem, originally written in the 1770s, tells the story of Edwin, a boy inspired by nature rather than formal education. This volume reflects Scottish Enlightenment ideas and Beattie’s commitment to humanity and reform. Though showing signs of age like wear on the leather and foxing on the pages, it remains an attractive and historically significant collector’s item.
The leather shows surface wear, scattered dark spots, and scuff marks consistent with a book of more than two centuries, most notably on the boards. The corners are worn and bumped, and there are cracks at the spine ends, though the covers remain firmly attached. The spine retains much of its original gilt floral decoration despite rubbing, with slight fraying at the head and tail. Internally, the pages show foxing throughout but remain fully readable. The engraved frontispiece portrait of Beattie is intact and gently toned. An honest copy in age-appropriate condition.
