A well-painted Victorian sporting still life, oil on canvas, depicting three gun dogs at rest after a day's shoot. A liver-and-white setter lies in the foreground, a black-and-tan setter crouches behind it, and a black-and-white setter sits alert to the right. Behind them a wicker game basket overflows with pheasant and woodcock, additional birds are scattered on the grass, and a hare hangs from a post alongside a pair of shotguns leaned against a wooden fence. The canvas bears a Reeves & Sons, Artists' Canvas, London stamp on the verso, placing manufacture between 1829 and 1890, and retains its original Victorian gilt gesso frame. Indistinctly signed lower left.
The painting is in good antique condition overall. The canvas is stable with fine age-appropriate craquelure consistent with a work of this period. The paint layer is intact with no visible losses or flaking. The varnish has darkened in the shadowed areas of the composition, as is typical for Victorian oils of this age, but does not obscure the subject.
The original stretcher bars are intact with no evidence of relining, which is a positive conservation note. The canvas has not been touched since it left the painter's hands.
The gilt gesso frame is in good decorative condition. There is a crack and small loss to the gesso at the lower left corner joint where the molding has separated slightly. The gilding retains good color and coverage overall with honest age wear. The frame presents well at hanging distance.
