This antique marquetry inlaid wood jewelry box dates to the late 19th century and reflects the refined craftsmanship of European decorative arts during the Grand Tour era. Measuring 4.5 inches high by 8 inches wide and 5 inches deep, it features striking geometric mosaic banding and star motifs that frame a central diamond escutcheon.
The intricate borders are constructed from individually assembled wooden rods that were glued together and sliced into cross sections to create repeating star and polygon patterns. This labor intensive technique was popular in Italy and throughout continental Europe in the second half of the 19th century and is often associated with Tunbridge style mosaic influence, though this example is most consistent with continental workmanship.
The interior reveals two fitted lidded compartments, originally for tea, or treasured keepsakes. The contrast between the warm honey brown ground and the darker inlaid woods creates architectural depth and visual movement across the lid and sides.
