This treasured 1875 edition of Alfred Tennyson's Poems, published by Henry S. King & Co. in London, showcases the Victorian poet laureate's most celebrated works in one elegant volume. From his enchanting early verses to the solemn beauty of "In Memoriam" and stirring patriotic pieces, this collection captures Tennyson at the height of his literary powers during an era of empire and profound social change. The book itself is a work of art, bound in rich oxblood morocco with intricate gilt tooling featuring an ornate oval frame of acanthus leaves and scrollwork, complemented by delicate floral details on the spine's raised bands. Gilt-edged pages and dentelle tooling on the inner boards suggest the craftsmanship of a premier London bindery. A charming inscription on the front endpaper, "Etta Fraser, with Flo's love. April 1896," adds authentic Victorian provenance and speaks to the personal connections these volumes once held. A remarkable keepsake for literature lovers and collectors of fine antique books.
Condition:
The boards are firmly attached and the hinges tight, though the headcaps and corners show light rubbing and the spine ridges exhibit minor chafing where gilt has thinned. The cover gilt is still bright, and the all-around gilt edges have mellowed to a soft, inviting burnish. Internally, foxing is confined to the front flyleaf and a few early leaves, especially around the charming gift inscription, but the gatherings are crisp and complete.
