Signed “J. Mynde sc.”, From Rapin and Tindal History of England

A striking 18th century architectural engraving of Blenheim House (Blenheim Palace), shown from the grand forecourt with the central portico and sweeping wings rendered in crisp, confident linework. This is the kind of print that instantly signals English country house style, but with real historical weight behind it.

What makes this sheet especially compelling is that it is signed in the plate “J. Mynde sc.” and includes its original publication reference at lower left, noting it was issued “In Mr Tyndal’s continuation of Rapin’s History of England.” In other words, this was not made as generic décor. It was produced for a major Enlightenment-era history set, when prints like this helped readers visualize national power through monuments, estates, and state-sponsored architecture.

The caption is the best conversation starter: “Built at the Expence of the Publick, and settled on the Duke of Marlborough and his Posterity.” It frames Blenheim exactly as it was intended to be understood, not just a palace, but a public monument and political statement tied to the Marlborough legacy.

Condition:

Antique condition consistent with age and prior book binding. Strong central vertical fold and additional handling creases, with visible surface toning and light scattered spotting. Edge wear and softening at the margins are present, along with minor rippling from age and storage. Unframed. Archival matting and framing recommended, and a professional flattening can improve presentation if desired.
