This 1807 edition of "The Minstrel" by James Beattie is a finely crafted book bound in full brown calf leather with gilt floral designs on the spine. The poem, originally written in the 1770s, tells the story of Edwin, a boy inspired by nature rather than formal education. This volume reflects Scottish Enlightenment ideas and Beattie’s commitment to humanity and reform. Though showing signs of age like wear on the leather and foxing on the pages, it remains an attractive and historically significant collector’s item.

Condition:

This book displays its age with grace and character. The leather has typical surface wear and scratches expected from a book over two hundred years old, including scattered dark spots and scuff marks, particularly on the boards. The corners are worn and bumped, and there are some cracks at the spine ends, but the covers remain firmly attached. The beautifully decorated spine shows signs of rubbing yet still keeps much of its original gilt detail, with slight fraying at the top and bottom. Inside, the pages have foxing but are fully readable, and the frontispiece portrait of Beattie is intact and gently toned.
