Written In English

This impressive two-volume set of Historical Characters by Sir Henry Lytton Bulwer was published in 1868 by Richard Bentley in London. It features a beautiful three-quarter brown leather binding with vibrant marbled boards and endpapers. The spines showcase raised bands, gilt detailing, and dual-colored labels in burgundy and green, reflecting the elegance of 19th-century deluxe bindings meant for a distinguished library. The book offers in-depth historical and political portraits of four key figures: Talleyrand, Cobbett, Mackintosh, and Canning. Rather than typical biographies, Bulwer combines personal insights and political critique, providing a unique perspective on the leaders who influenced modern Europe. This work, emerging at the peak of Victorian intellectual curiosity, is a thoughtful blend of tribute and analysis for readers intrigued by power, leadership, and legacy.

Condition:

Condition-wise, both volumes present very well. The bindings are tight and secure, with minor rubbing to the leather at corners and spine ends, typical of age. The marbled boards retain their vivid coloration, and the gilt on the spine remains bright and attractive. Internally, the pages are clean and free of markings, with only slight age-toning and a few light wrinkles to the front endpapers of Volume I. No loose pages, and both hinges remain firm. This is a handsome and historically significant set that would be a standout addition to any curated collection or decorative library.
