Two areas of veneer loss are present and should be noted clearly. The first is at the top rear corner of the lid, where a section of the mahogany veneer is missing, exposing the pine carcass beneath. The second is at the bottom front corner of the case, also showing the carcass wood. The surface elsewhere retains a warm color and shows light scratches and handling marks across the lid and sides. The lock works and turns; the key is not present. The original interior fittings, which would have included a mirror or fitted compartments, have been removed at some point in the box's history, and the raw pine interior shows the original mounting holes, tack remnants, and small surface staining from that earlier fitted lining. Both drawers slide and function. The brass shield escutcheons on the case and lid both show wear to the gilt finish. The swan-neck carry handle on top is present and secure.
