victorian-oil-on-panel-alnwick-castle-attributed-to-john-barker-ca-1870
*RESERVED FOR SUZETTE* Antique Victorian Oil on Panel, Alnwick Castle, Attributed to John Barker

Attributed to John Barker (1811–1886), this oil on panel depicts Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, viewed from across the River Aln at golden hour, with a shepherd and grazing sheep in the foreground and a stone bridge spanning the river at left. The panel was purchased by a previous owner, J.W. Baxter, from Ward's in Berkley, England in 1991 for £1,000, and carries the original handwritten provenance label on the verso. Alnwick Castle has been the seat of the Percy family, Dukes of Northumberland, since 1309, and was one of the most painted topographical subjects in Victorian England.

[d]Artist | Attributed to John Barker (1811–1886), British

[d]Title | Alnwick Castle

[d]Medium | Oil on panel

[d]Subject | Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, viewed across the River Aln at sunset, with shepherd, sheep, stone bridge, and village buildings

[d]Framed Size | 12.75 in W x 16.5 in H x 1.5 in D

[d]Origin | England

[d]Age | Mid-to-late 19th century, circa 1850–1880

[d]Style | Victorian topographical landscape

[d]Frame | Gilt wood frame with egg-and-dart inner ornament and brass title plate reading "Alnwick Castle / J Barker"

[d]Signature | Unsigned; title plate attribution on frame

[d]Provenance | Purchased by J.W. The paint surface shows yellowing of the varnish layer across the whole composition, which mutes the original tonal contrast and warmth somewhat but does not obscure the image. This is a normal and reversible condition for an unrestored Victorian panel painting of this age. The paint layer itself appears stable with no visible flaking, active losses, or areas of concern visible in the photographs. The panel support is solid with no warping or structural issues apparent. Some craquelure is visible in the close-up verso photograph, consistent with age.

The gilt frame shows general wear including rubbing to the gilding along the outer edges and a slight gap at one corner joint. The gilding is otherwise present and intact. The brass title plate is firmly attached and legible. The backing paper has areas of damage and loss, consistent with age and handling.

https://austynmariedesign.com/products/victorian-oil-on-panel-alnwick-castle-attributed-to-john-barker-ca-1870
