This large antique still life oil painting captures the richness and abundance of late nineteenth century European dining room art. Painted in the Dutch revival style that was popular from the 1870s to the early 1900s, the artist arranges a pineapple, oranges, and other warm-toned fruits across a reflective surface. The deep caramel shadows and dark background create the dramatic mood that defined the era’s still life tradition.
The palette has a beautiful warmth to it. The brushwork on the pineapple crown and the peeled citrus adds movement and texture, while the long utensil across the foreground brings a quiet narrative presence. This style of still life was often commissioned for formal homes and hotels, celebrating imported goods that felt luxurious and exotic during the Victorian period.
The painting sits in its original gilded gesso frame, which has the classic ornate profile used around the turn of the century. The number stenciled on the back suggests it once passed through an auction house or framing studio. Even with imperfections, the piece has strong decorative impact and an authentic antique character.
Condition:
Painting is in fair antique condition. There is a small area of paint loss in the upper left section and scattered surface abrasions consistent with age. The upper right quadrant shows a change in sheen that suggests past restoration or selective varnish work. The reverse of the canvas shows an old abrasion but it is not active or structural. The gilded gesso frame has losses, including a missing section at the bottom right corner. The painting remains stable and display ready. Please review all photos.
