A remarkable pair of 19th-century neoclassical wall plaques attributed to William Wetmore Story (1819–1895), the American sculptor known for his work in Rome during the height of the Grand Tour era.

Each features a hand-carved and water-gilded giltwood frame with cherub supports and scrolling acanthus leaves. The medallions are lightweight castings in tinned white metal (spelter), chosen for its ability to capture fine detail while maintaining an elegant, manageable weight. One depicts a heraldic shield with a saltire and four castellated towers, symbolizing lineage and fortitude; the other, a profile bust of a 17th-century gentleman in armor, representing intellect and virtue.

Both reliefs are inscribed W. STORY FEC. — Latin for “Story made this” — linking them directly to the studio or authorized models of William Wetmore Story, whose neoclassical work attracted English and American patrons traveling through Italy. The pair would have been made for the Grand Tour market, where travelers commissioned art celebrating heritage, intellect, and refinement.

The original gilding remains intact with the warm glow of aged water gilding and subtle red bole beneath the surface. Together, they present as a rare companion pair: portrait and armorial — an evocative blend of scholarship and artistry.

Materials: Carved and water-gilded giltwood; cast tinned white metal (spelter) medallions

  • Suggested Use: Display as a matched pair in a formal interior—mounted at eye level in a library, entrance hall or gallery niche

Condition:

Excellent antique condition for age. The carved giltwood retains its original water gilding with rich tonality and visible red bole beneath high points, consistent with mid-19th-century craftsmanship. Minor scattered surface wear, small edge chips, and natural craquelure to the gilded finish. Cast medallions show light tarnish and patina appropriate to age. Original wooden backboards and hanging loops intact. Structurally sound and ready for display.
