moore-poetical-works-1863-leather
Thomas Moore Poetical Works 1863 Leather Gilt Edges

Full leather with blind-tooled Gothic Revival panels, raised bands, and an all-edges-gilt block that's been gauffered with a repeating tooled pattern, which you can see running the full fore-edge and top edge. Inside the front cover, a presentation inscription dated February 1863 puts a named gift into the same year the book was printed, which most surviving copies of this edition cannot claim. Halswelle's wood engravings carry the literary side, opening with Lalla Rookh and the dedication to Samuel Rogers. The leather is worn at the spine ends and corners and the front joint is starting to go, but the gilt edges have held their shine and the book sits well in the hand.

[d]Author | Thomas Moore [d]Title | The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore [d]Illustrator | Keeley Halswelle [d]Publisher | William P. The spine ends are rubbed and frayed, the corners are bumped and worn through to the board at the tips, and the front joint is cracking along the hinge with some loss to the leather at the head. The covers retain their blind-tooled Gothic panels clearly. Internally the book is sound. The all-edges-gilt block is bright and the gauffered tooling on the edges is crisp. The marbled endpapers show light age toning. A presentation inscription in ink sits at the head of the title page, dated February 1863, partially legible, reading as a gift to a named recipient from a friend. The text block is clean and tight with the expected light toning to the prelims. A well-preserved interior in a worn but stable period binding.
