James Montgomery's The Pelican Island was the kind of poetry awarded to students who showed genuine promise in the 1820s, serious religious verse inspired by Captain Flinders's accounts of pelicans nesting on uncharted Pacific islands, and Montgomery was considered a major literary figure in his day. The spine is dark maroon morocco with five raised bands, each compartment densely gilt-tooled, and the marbled endpapers inside carry the full cobblestone pattern in blue, green, and yellow. A piece of English bookbinding history with a named recipient and a date.

[d]Author | James Montgomery [d]Title | The Pelican Island and Other Poems [d]Publisher | Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green [d]Date | 1828 [d]Edition | Second Edition [d]Binding | Full green and maroon morocco prize binding, gilt-tooled boards and spine, five raised bands [d]Dimensions | 6.45 in H x 4 in W x 1 in D [d]Provenance | Presented to Lucy Partridge, Lombard House School, 1827 [d]Language | English [d]Origin | United Kingdom

[condition] The binding shows honest age throughout. The green morocco on both boards carries surface scuffing, crazing, and light soiling consistent with nearly two centuries of handling. The gilt tooling on the boards remains largely legible and present, with some loss and wear to the finer detail work, particularly toward the corners. The spine gilt-tooling is well-preserved and the raised bands are intact. The marbled endpapers are sound. The text block is clean and the paper remains white and unbrowned with no significant foxing visible. The binding is structurally sound. Offered as a good example of a named English prize binding in worn but honest condition.
