guardian-steele-addison-1818-two-volume-set
The Guardian Steele Addison 2 Volume Set 1818 Green Morocco

The Guardian came out of the same partnership that gave us The Tatler and The Spectator, Richard Steele and Joseph Addison writing daily essays on manners, education, religion, and the small absurdities of London life in 1713. This two volume set is the 1818 stereotyped edition printed by A. Wilson in Camden Town, bound in green morocco with gilt-tooled spines and stone-pattern marbled endpapers. The front endpaper of each volume carries two ownership inscriptions, the earlier recording that the set was bought at a library sale around 1840 and a later hand dated 27 April 1928. Neither name reads clearly now, which I rather like. It leaves the chain of ownership for the next reader to chase down.

[d]Author | Richard Steele and Joseph Addison, with contributions by George Berkeley and Alexander Pope [d]Title | The Guardian, with Notes and Illustrations, in Two Volumes [d]Publisher | A. The green morocco shows scuffing and surface wear across the boards and some darkening to the leather, all consistent with age and handling. The marbled endpapers are clean and vivid. Each volume carries two ownership inscriptions to the front free endpaper in ink, partly legible, recording the set's purchase at a library sale around 1840 and a later note dated 27 April 1928. Text blocks are tight with light age toning to the pages and occasional minor foxing. A handsome and complete set that displays well.
