fowler-julius-caesar-prize-binding
W Warde Fowler Julius Caesar 1892 Kidderminster School Prize Binding

Full burgundy morocco with the gilt armorial of King Charles I School, Kidderminster, stamped on both boards, the crowned CR cipher above the school seal dated 1637, all of it carried out as a school prize binding around 1900. Inside the text is W. Warde Fowler's study of Julius Caesar from the Heroes of the Nations series, printed by Putnam in 1892, but the reason to own this copy is the documentation laid in with it. Two prize certificates survive, both awarded to J. F. Chadwick, one for Latin in Form V signed by headmaster H. de B. Gibbins, the other a Cambridge Local Examinations prize for Scripture dated 1900. The marbled edges and endpapers and the raised gilt spine bands finish a copy that reads as much as a record of one pupil's school career as a book about Rome.

[d]Author | W. The leather spine label is cracked with loss at the second compartment, and the head of the spine is chipped and frayed with the red leather underlayer showing through. The corners are rubbed with some board exposed at the tips, and there is light surface scratching to the boards. The gilt armorial and spine tooling remain bright. Internally the text block is clean and bright, the photogravure frontispiece and wood engravings are crisp, and the hinges appear sound. The two prize certificates are present and laid in, one with a partly obscured signature. The marbled edges and endpapers are in good order.
