An 1856 French prize book celebrating the legendary medieval hero Bertrand du Guesclin. Written by Guyard de Berville and published by A. Mame et Cie of Tours, this beautifully bound volume was awarded to students for exemplary conduct. The book features an ornate blue and gilt embossed binding with a hand-colored portrait of du Guesclin, showcasing Mame's renowned craftsmanship. This copy includes a handwritten 1856 inscription marking it as a prix de conduite (good behavior award). A treasured piece of 19th-century French educational and religious history.

Condition:

The binding remains firm and beautifully intact, with moderate rubbing and minor edge wear to the boards and spine. Gilt and blue embossing retain strong color and detail. Spine shows small chips to the head and tail. Pages exhibit expected foxing and gentle toning throughout. The front inscription leaf shows age toning and a corner chip, with a clear 1856 handwritten dedication. A clean, well-preserved example of a Mame prize binding with a particularly vivid cover design.
