The despatch box was the working travel case of the Victorian gentleman, government official, lawyer, or military officer. It carried correspondence, contracts, deeds, and important papers between a country estate and a London office, between chambers and court, between a regimental headquarters and a field posting. The most famous version is the red Ministerial Despatch Box still used by British Cabinet ministers today, but private versions like this one were made by the London leather firms for anyone whose work required carrying papers securely. The flush recessed brass campaign handle with twisted rope bail, the crossed leather straps in the lid for holding papers flat, the fully leather lined interior, and the fitted tray over a deep main well are the defining features of the format.

[d]Type | Despatch box

[d]Material | Leather over wood, brass mounts, leather lined interior

[d]Origin | United Kingdom

[d]Age | Circa 1880 to 1900, late Victorian period

[d]Style | Late Victorian English, campaign style

[d]Size | 5.25 in H x 12 in W x 9 in D

[d]Interior size | 3.5 in H x 11 in W x 7.75 in D

[d]Tray | Removable leather tray, 1.75 in H, with fixed compartments 2 in W along the right side and a small removable leather compartment that sits within the side tray

[d]Hardware | Flush recessed brass campaign handle with twisted rope bail, brass corner reinforcements at hinges, brass keyhole escutcheon

[d]Interior | Fully leather lined throughout, crossed leather straps in the lid for holding papers, removable leather covered tray with insert compartment, deep main well sized for folded foolscap or A4 documents

[d]Lock | Lock present and intact, no key

[condition]

The box is in good antique condition with honest age appropriate wear throughout. There is some lifting and separation of the leather along the lid edge near the hinge, visible on close inspection. The flush brass handle is original and intact, with a soft worn patina to the rope bail and the surrounding plate. The brass keyhole escutcheon is intact and the lock mechanism is present, but no key is included. The leather lined interior is intact throughout with light dust, surface wear, and minor scuffing consistent with use. The crossed leather straps in the lid are present and functional with some softening from age. The removable leather covered tray is in good order with its insert compartment intact. The main well shows light staining to the base consistent with original use. The hinges are sound and the lid closes properly.
